How to get your child motivated

If you have a child who is struggling in school and doesn’t seem to be motivated to make an effort, the first thing you want to do is explore whether there is some obstacle getting in his way. Learning issues, social challenges, attention or emotional problems can all cause kids to disengage academically.

But not all kids who are underperforming in school—clearly not living up to their potential—have a diagnosable problem. And there are a number of things parents can do to help motivate kids to try harder.

Get involved
As a parent, your presence in the academic life of your child is crucial to her commitment to work. Do homework with her, and let her know that you’re available to answer questions. Get in the habit of asking her about what she learned in school, and generally engage her academically.

By demonstrating your interest in your child’s school life, you’re showing her school can be exciting and interesting. This is especially effective with young kids who tend to be excited about whatever you’re excited about.

Teenagers can bristle if they feel you are asking too many questions, so make sure you are sharing the details of your day, too. A conversation is always better than an interrogation.

Likewise, it’s important to stay involved but give older kids a little more space. If you’re on top of your daughter all the time about homework, she may develop resistance and be less motivated to work—not to mention the strain it will put on your relationship.

Use reinforcement

Many parents are nervous about rewarding kids for good work, and it’s true that tangible rewards can turn into a slippery slope. But there are ways to use extrinsic motivation that will eventually be internalized by your kid. “Kids respond really well to social reinforcers like praises, hugs, high fives, and those kinds of things,” says Laura Phillips, a neuropsychologist at the Child Mind Institute. “Then they start to achieve because it feels good for them.”

Enjoy your holiday.

Once upon a time, in a quaint little town nestled between rolling hills and meandering rivers, there stood a prestigious boarding school known as GOD'S COVENANT MODEL COLLEGE. Its home away hospitality and level of student-teacher ratio inter-relationship attracted students from all walks of life, seeking not just education but an experience that would shape their futures. Among the many students who arrived at GOD'S COVENANT MODEL COLLEGE was a young girl named TOBI. She hailed from a bustling city and found herself struggling to fit in amidst the tranquil surroundings of the school. Being away from her family and friends, she often felt lonely and out of place. TOBI's initial days were filled with longing for the comfort of home and the familiar faces she left behind. But as time passed, she began to discover the magic that lay within the boarding school system. The school became her second home, and the students, her second family. The nurturing environment of the boarding school allowed TOBI to build close bonds with her peers. She found friends who supported her through both triumphs and tribulations, forming relationships that would last a lifetime. The sense of camaraderie and shared experiences within the school's tight-knit community were invaluable in shaping her character and teaching her the values of empathy and understanding. At GOD'S COVENANT MODEL COLLEGE, education wasn't limited to textbooks and classrooms. The school embraced a holistic approach to learning, encouraging students to explore their passions beyond academics. TOBI discovered her love for the performing arts and found herself on the stage, delivering breathtaking performances that stunned the entire school. The encouragement and guidance from her teachers and fellow students pushed her to achieve heights she never thought possible. As TOBI matured, so did her appreciation for the boarding school system. Living in the school's campus taught her valuable life skills - from time management and responsibility to independence and resilience. Away from the distractions of the outside world, she could fully immerse herself in her studies and personal growth. Months passed swiftly, and it was time for long Holiday. Emotions swelled within her as she looked back on her journey. She couldn't imagine the person she would have become without the nurturing environment of GOD'S COVENANT MODEL COLLEGE's boarding school system. TOBI will continue to grow, achieving her dreams, and making a positive impact on the world. But deep in her heart, she never forgot the lessons and memories she gained from GOD'S COVENANT MODEL COLLEGE, reaffirming time and again that the boarding school system was indeed the best.
